The students of the German-Hungarian Summer Academy were welcomed at the City Hall
The students of the German-Hungarian summer academy had the opportunity to learn about the historical events and locations of the Pan-European Picnic at the City Hall on Monday.
The events of the summer of 1989, such as the Pan-European Picnic and the opening of Hungary's state border, significantly contributed to the end of the division of Europe. It has been a tradition for almost 10 years, on the Pan-European Picnic, the Hungarian-German Youth Association and the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation organize a summer academy including visits to historical sites.
On behalf of Sopron Municipality Mayor Dr. Ciprián Farkas welcomed the students. In his speech, he said, since 1989, Sopron has been not only a city of loyalty, but also a city of freedom.
Michael Winzer, head of the Hungarian office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation, emphasized every year they come to Sopron and invite young people to commemorate the world-historical event that took place 36 years ago.
At the end of the welcoming speech, the mayor of Sopron presented gift packages to members of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation and the Hungarian-German Association for Youth, who will participate the commemoration of the 36th anniversary of the Pan-European Picnic on Tuesday evening in the Pan-European Picnic Memorial Park in Sopronpuszta.
